Pollutant of Concern:
Lead (2008 standard)
Summary:
The concentration of lead (Pb) in the air in Hayden is occasionally above the federal limit established in the federal National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). ADEQ submitted a nonattainment State Implementation Plan (SIP) to EPA in March 2017 that was approved effective Dec. 14, 2018. On Jan. 31, 2022, EPA found that the Hayden area did not attain the 2008 Pb NAAQS by the statutory attainment date of Oct. 4, 2018. In September 2024, ADEQ submitted a revised nonattainment area SIP to EPA and updated ASARCO’s operating permit to include additional controls to reduce Pb emissions and enable the area to attain the NAAQS by Jan. 31, 2027. Currently, ADEQ is amending existing rules to incorporate the permit conditions into the rule.
