Summary: 

The concentration of lead in the air in Hayden is frequently above federal standards. ADEQ submitted a nonattainment State Implementation Plan (SIP) to EPA in March 2017 that was approved by U.S. EPA effective December 14, 2018. ASARCO has made numerous improvements to the Hayden smelter as part of a $180 million converter retrofit project that will dramatically reduce lead concentrations in 2018. Some of the controls implemented at the copper smelter include:

  • Ventilation hooding over furnaces
  • Baghouses for flash furnace and anode furnace
  • Paved road cleaning
  • Chemical dust suppressants for unpaved roads
  • Enclosed and ventilated storage of acid plant scrubber blowdown solids
  • Wind fences for byproduct storage
