Contaminant of Concern

Tetrachloroethene (PCE)

Action Taken

ADEQ conducted an early response action (ERA) that consisted of the installation of a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system to remediate a source of PCE in soils at the site. The system ran from 1994 to 1995, and then was removed from the site in 2003. In April 2015, a site remedial investigation (RI) report was completed. Between October 2017 and January 2018, three in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) injections were conducted at two groundwater monitoring wells. The injections were followed by groundwater sampling events in April and May 2018, which indicated that PCE concentrations in sampled wells were below the aquifer water quality standard (AWQS) for PCE of 5 micrograms per liter (µg/l).

A site closeout feasibility study (FS) report was issued in June 2018, causing the site to be removed from the WQARF registry. To address stakeholder concerns regarding site closure, additional groundwater monitoring was performed in February 2019 at the site, after Water Quality Assurance Revolving Fund (WQARF) registry removal. The sampling results indicated that concentrations of PCE were again above the AWQS in some wells. In December 2019, the site was reopened for further investigation and remedial action.

Status

Since the 2019 discovery that PCE continues to exceed its AWQS at the site, ADEQ has installed seven additional monitoring wells, collected groundwater geochemical and contaminant mass flux data, and resumed regular groundwater monitoring at the site. Current actions are focused on identifying sources of contaminant impact to groundwater and assessing remedial options. There is no known drinking water impact from PCE at the site.
