Action Taken
The remedial investigation (RI) began in 2007. Numerous groundwater monitoring and soil vapor wells have been installed at the Site. PCE has been detected in groundwater monitoring wells at concentrations as high as 12,900 micrograms per liter (μg/L).
At the Viking Cleaners source area, an air sparge/soil vapor extraction (AS/SVE) system was installed in 2004 as part of an Early Response Action (ERA). ERA operations were conducted at Viking Cleaners until 2018. It is estimated that the system removed more than 3,000 pounds (lbs) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
At the Maroney’s source area, an SVE system was installed in 2011. The system has been expanded twice and has removed approximately 115 lbs of VOCs. The SVE system, which was previously shut down in 2018 for rebound evaluation, resumed operation on an intermittent schedule in April 2020. Rebound evaluations continue at Maroney’s to determine the need for continued operation.
During semiannual groundwater monitoring conducted in April 2020, the highest PCE concentration detected in groundwater was 57 μg/L. An enhanced reductive dechlorination groundwater treatment pilot study was initiated in February 2020 and is currently ongoing.
The RI report was completed in June 2019 and the Feasibility Study report was completed in September 2019. The Proposed Remedial Action Plan was released on Sept. 3, 2020, for a 90-day public comment period, which concluded on Dec. 2, 2020.
