Sand Stone Fire

Special Statement:

Smoke Map For 7/30/2024

Overview

The Sand Stone fire was mapped yesterday (Monday) at approximately 23,400 acres as it continues to burn northeast of Fountain Hills. Yesterday, smoke was noted moving east over Tonto Basin and Roosevelt Lake.

Smoke Synopsis

Today, smoke is forecast to move toward the east, similar to yesterday. Light to moderate smoke impacts are possible in Tonto Basin and Roosevelt Lake. Smoke will continue to move eastward over the San Carlos and Fort Apache Reservations, with light impacts possible to Cibecue this afternoon. Overnight, wind will become light with light smoke impacts possible to Ft. McDowell and Fountain Hills. Any smoke that moves into the area overnight will lift out of the region by 9 am.

Tomorrow, there will be a pattern shift as a disturbance moves into Arizona from the south. During the late morning into the afternoon, smoke is forecast to move toward the east with light to moderate impacts once again possible in the Tonto Basin area. By late afternoon into the evening, the potential for strong outflow winds increases, which could push smoke in any direction, resulting in brief moderate smoke impacts for locations around the fire. Smoke may also move into the Payson and Verde Valley area Wednesday night as larger scale outflows moving from the south/southeast to the north/northwest will be possible.
