Press Release
Air Quality

PHOENIX (October 2, 2019) – The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is seeking solutions to ozone pollution in the Phoenix and Tucson areas. One big change people can make is to go electric with their next vehicle. ADEQ is helping inform those that are ready to make the switch from gas to electric about a rebate program offered by Nissan. Qualifying buyers in Arizona can get up to $3500 off a new LEAF®.

Over 50 percent of ozone created from man-made pollution in the Phoenix area is from driving on our roads. Beside the smaller amount of emissions produced from charging, an electric vehicle produces zero emissions. By going electric, an average commuter in the Phoenix area could save around 3,321 pounds of pollution each year.

How do I get the rebate?*

Step 1. Find out if you qualify. At least one of your vehicles must be required to go through emissions testing in the Phoenix and Tucson areas. The paperwork you receive after passing the emissions test is the first step in qualifying for the rebate.

Step 2. Go to azdeq.gov/evrebate to download and print the Nissan rebate flier.

Step 3. Take both those documents, as well as proof of Arizona residency, to your Nissan dealership and inquire about applying for the rebate on a new LEAF®.

Why is there emissions testing in Phoenix and Tucson?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires monitoring of vehicle emissions in major metropolitan areas which are not meeting federal health standards for ozone and/or other pollutants. Along with other required measures to improve air quality, the goal is to reduce the amount of pollution in areas of concern, such as Phoenix and Tucson, where vehicles are a major contributor to ozone formation.
