Grant monies to fund asbestos abatement on the Old Town Hall

Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) officials announced today an $85,000 Brownfields Grant award to the Town of Pinetop-Lakeside to perform asbestos abatement on the Old Town Hall located at 1360 N. Niels Lane, Lakeside, AZ. Abatement of the building will allow the Town to demolish the building, which is no longer a suitable environment for worker safety. The building is in the Lakeside Village Redevelopment Area. Upon completion of the abatement, the Town will demolish the structure with the exception of the gymnasium, which is currently used by the community as a Pickle Ball Court.

"We are very appreciative of this Brownfields Grant Award," said Matt Patterson, Public Works Director. "The assistance with the asbestos abatement of our old Town Hall will greatly benefit the Town of Pinetop-Lakeside and our citizens. We look forward to working with ADEQ to get this much needed project completed."

ADEQ Brownfields Assistance Program (BAP)

Established in 2003, BAP conducts projects through Arizona’s State Response Grant using funds provided by the Environmental Protection Agency. The program has funded more than 70 projects, assisting entities from local governments, schools, hospitals and nonprofits to tribes in completing environmental assessments, cleanup and restoration.

Redeveloping Brownfields has the potential to reduce environmental hazards, mitigate public health threats, create new business opportunities, increase tax revenue and restore habitats and blighted areas to productive use. Program funds are limited and available to eligible applicants in the order that they apply and qualify.
