ADEQ does not regulate the water quality of private wells. Private well owners are responsible for maintaining their well(s). Information about rules and regulations applicable to well owners is maintained by the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) and guidelines for private well water quality testing are provided by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS).
EPA recommends that private well owners conduct testing for contaminants and take action when results exceed a federal drinking water standard. If PFAS are detected in your private well, then you can take steps to lower the levels of PFAS in your drinking water.
PFAS have been detected in public drinking water systems statewide and ADEQ has published these results on its online interactive PFAS map. Private well owners can use the map to see whether there are PFAS sampling results located near their private well.
