Hazardous Waste Open Detonation Permit | Marine Corps Air Station Yuma Waste Munitions Treatment Area

On Aug. 3, 2026, the comment period begins for the draft Hazardous Waste Open Detonation Permit to treat waste munitions through open detonation at the Munitions Treatment Range, Barry M. Goldwater Range – Western Segment located at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, in Yuma County, Arizona. The comment period ends Sept. 17, 2026.

The open detonation unit is located approximately 12 miles southeast of the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma Main Base and two miles south of the Auxiliary Airfield II. No hazardous waste landfills, waste piles, surface impoundments, and land treatment units are to be constructed at the facility. The draft permit proposes to allow the facility to renew its current hazardous waste permit for the operation of its open detonation unit for another 10 years
