Contaminants of Concern

Chlorinated solvents tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE)

Action Taken

Chlorinated solvents tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) were initially detected in the area in 2002 during a leaking underground storage tank (UST) investigation on the southeast corner of Miller Valley Road and Hillside Avenue. The investigation ruled out the leaking tank as a source of the PCE and TCE.

The Preliminary Investigation (PI) found that soil gas and shallow groundwater contained PCE near the location of a former dry cleaners where a Fry’s Grocery store parking lot is today. During the PI, PCE was also reported in the groundwater in the vicinity of a current dry cleaners on the south side of Fair Street. In addition, PCE was detected above Aquifer Water Quality Standards (AWQS) in two private irrigation wells.

The Remedial Investigation (RI) was initiated in September 2017 after the site was listed on the WQARF registry. PCE and TCE were detected in shallow and deep groundwater above AWQS in the area of two former dry cleaners, one in the area of Fry’s parking lot, the other near the current Fry’s fuel center. No PCE or TCE were detected above AWQS in groundwater at the current dry cleaners. The private irrigation wells were re-sampled, and PCE was found to have increased since the PI phase testing.

PCE was only detected at low levels in the soil gas at the site. TCE was detected in one location at very low levels, away from any buildings. Two buildings were evaluated for potential vapor intrusion, but no PCE or TCE were detected in indoor air. No other private wells were found to be impacted by the site contaminants. Data from sampling Miller Creek also showed that there are no impacts from the site to the creek.

Status

The Final RI report and the Feasibility Study (FS) work plan were released on April 9, 2020. ADEQ completed the FS Report in March 2023. ADEQ is conducting pilot testing for remedy evaluation and preparing the Proposed Remedial Action Plan.
