PHOENIX (September 17, 2018) – Governor Ducey has issued a proclamation for Pollution Prevention (P2) Week, Sept. 17 – 21, 2018. This proclamation recognizes efforts across the state that benefit public health, the environment and economy of Arizona.

Since 1991, ADEQ’s P2 Planning Program has assisted businesses in reducing toxic substances at their source. By implementing a P2 Plan, a business can minimize the generation of hazardous waste and disposal costs, plus prevent release of pollutants into the environment.

Additionally, since the start of 2018, twenty-four state agencies located in Phoenix and Tucson initiated an expanded recycling program at three state-owned office buildings. This effort was led by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and will continue to grow to include additional agencies and offices. Over 3000 pounds of waste are now going to recycling centers instead of landfills. ADEQ also launched an online recycling toolkit to help schools, businesses and municipalities develop or expand current recycling programs.

For P2 Week, ADEQ partnered with the Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association (AzLTA) to launch a comprehensive update to the Certified Green Lodging program. Through the program, hotels, resorts, bed & breakfasts and more can reduce their impact on the environment, while also increasing their ability to attract the growing number of environmentally-friendly travelers.

“This program helps properties across the state measure and monitor their performance, not only delivering world class sustainability best practices, but also providing operational budget savings” said David Drennon, AzLTA Executive Vice President. “It’s a win for the environment, economy and the people of Arizona.”
