On Sept. 21, 2022, the public comment period begins for proposed cleanup activities for Leaking Underground Storage Tank (UST) case number 5764.01 at Former Shell #42/Pilot Travel Center #1180 in Tonopah, Arizona. The comment period ends Oct. 21, 2022.

Public Notice Information

A Corrective Action Plan (CAP) dated Aug. 16, 2022, has been submitted to ADEQ. The CAP contains a proposal to clean up petroleum contamination from a UST system at the following facility:

Leaking UST Case File No.: 5764.01
Facility ID No.: 0-005840
Maricopa County

Facility Address

Former Shell #42/Pilot Travel Center #1180
41112 W. Indian School Road
Tonopah, AZ 85354

Proposed Activities

The proposed activities include the following cleanup technologies that will be used to obtain the cleanup levels that are protective of public health, welfare and the environment:

Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE)

SVE is the remedial alternative proposed to address residual contaminants in the soil and potential vapor emanating from the groundwater surface.

Remediation of contaminated soil will be conducted using an existing SVE system. An SVE system reduces soil contamination by extracting vapor from the pore space in the soil.  The recovered vapor will be treated at the surface such that emissions do not exceed specified concentrations in any air quality permit issued by the county, city or state.

In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO)

ISCO is the remedial alternative proposed to address residual contaminants in the groundwater.

Mitigation of contaminated groundwater will be treated using ISCO by subsurface application of a hydrogen peroxide solution directly into the formation. This approach assists in breaking down petroleum related chemicals of concern (COCs) through abiotic chemical reactions into harmless products. ISCO technology provides an additional remedial benefit by adding dissolved oxygen to the groundwater, allowing for further reduction of contaminants by naturally occurring biological processes.
