Wildfire Smoke Forecast

Mescal and Telegraph Fires

Overview

The Telegraph Fire is now approximately 179,680 acres. The fire continued to be active on the east/southeast side yesterday (Friday) and produced moderate smoke, which rose and dispersed toward the west. Light to moderate smoke was noted moving over portions of Queen Valley and the Phoenix Valley, with light to moderate smoke impacts in Superior.

Smoke Synopsis

Portions of this fire will continue to be active today, given hot and dry conditions, as well as shifting winds. As a result, this fire will continue to put up smoke. Today, winds over the fire will be light in the morning, before strengthening out of the west by the afternoon. In the afternoon, transport winds will be out of the west initially, then shift to out of the northwest later in the afternoon/evening. As a result, smoke will likely remain near the fire in the morning and then disperse to the east and then east-southeast in the afternoon.

Locations downwind of the fire, such as San Carlos and Safford, could see light to moderate smoke overhead. Moderate impacts may also continue to be possible in Globe and San Carlos, given their proximity to the fire (Globe is seeing moderate/heavy impacts this morning).

Similar to previous days this week, high-based (dry) thunderstorms could form over the White Mountains this afternoon. Therefore, we can't completely rule out strong, gusty outflow winds affecting the fire in the afternoon/evening. These winds would lead to smoke moving in any direction and cause brief but moderate to high smoke impacts to locations around the fire.

Tomorrow, winds over the fire and transport winds are forecast to be even stronger, and out of the west-northwest or northwest. Smoke will disperse to the east in the late morning, then to the southeast in the afternoon. Thunderstorms over the White Mountains may again be possible.

For the Pinnacle Fire (west of Safford) a smoke forecast is available here.
