PUBLIC NOTICE | Proposed AZPDES Renewal Permit for the Pima County Wastewater Reclamation Department

Notice: Pursuant to the Clean Water Act and in accordance with Arizona Administrative Code (AAC) R18-9-A907, the Director of ADEQ proposes to issue an Arizona Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (AZPDES) Permit to discharge pollutants to U.S. waters to the following applicant, subject to certain effluent limitations and special conditions:

Information

Pima County applied for a renewal AZPDES permit for the Kino Environmental Restoration Project (KERP) which consists of three impoundments and four stream courses with several in-stream ponds. The KERP receives treated domestic wastewater from the Agua Nueva Water Reclamation Facility, which is a publicly owned treatment works in Tucson. Pima County proposed a discharge of up to 2 million gallons per day (mgd) of treated domestic wastewater from KERP to Julian Wash in the Santa Cruz River Basin in Township 14 S, Range 14 E, Section 29, in Pima County, Ariz. The KERP site also includes a separate pond which is lined and raised in elevation and contains chlorinated reclaimed water used for irrigation of local ball fields. No sludge is generated at KERP.

Public Comment Period 

Dates: June 29, 2017 – July 31, 2017

All written comments received by ADEQ by the close of business 30 days after publication of this notice will be considered in the final permit decision. A public hearing request must be in writing and must include the reasons for such request. If there is a significant degree of public interest, the Director will hold a hearing in accordance with Arizona Administrative Code R18-9-A908(B).
