Why Is a Leaking UST of Concern?

Leaking underground storage tanks (USTs) have been identified as a major source of soil and groundwater contamination, as millions of gallons of petroleum products and other hazardous substances are stored in USTs in the United States. Spills on the ground are not considered a leaking UST, however they do pose a risk to public health and the environment. Therefore, care should be taken when dealing with spills of fuel products, to limit exposure. Not sure what an underground storage tank is? | Learn More >

What Are My Health Risks?

In the majority of cases, leaks from USTs do not pose an immediate threat to public health. In some cases, leaks from USTs may threaten drinking water resources through soil, groundwater and surface water, and indoor air quality through vapor intrusion.

For Soil | There is little to no health risk unless there is contact with skin or ingestion of contaminated soil.

For Groundwater | If you are connected to a Public Water System (PWS), there is little to no risk of impact from a leaking UST because the water is filtered through the PWS for residential and business use | View Drinking Water Notices >

If you have a private well in the vicinity of the leaking UST, we encourage you to test the well water.  Not sure what to test for?Learn More >

For Vapor Intrusion (VI) | There is little to no risk of vapor intrusion unless you live or work immediately above the property where the UST leak occurred. In rare cases, contamination may spread through natural or man-made pathways and reach indoor air | Learn More >

Leaking USTs in Arizona

The following map shows where confirmed leaking UST sites requiring cleanup are located in Arizona. Please note the name of the current facility is listed on the map; due to business and property sales over time, the current facility may not be the responsible party at the time the leak occurred. A Public Records request may be submitted for information on the actual responsible party of the leaking UST  |  View Map >
