Recreational Beach Monitoring

Arizona is a beautiful state providing recreators with iconic landscapes ranging from the Grand Canyon’s mighty Colorado River to the Red Rocks of Sedona’s meandering Oak Creek to appreciate. Getting outdoors and enjoying nature is part of a healthy lifestyle.

To protect and inform the public about the health of the waters they visit and support swimming safe and swimming healthy, the ADEQ Recreational Beach Monitoring Program conducts water quality sampling and testing for E. coli, a naturally occurring bacteria that can cause illness when present in high numbers.

As part of this long-term program, ADEQ is encouraging collaboration program participation from recreational destination landowners by offering:
  • Water quality sampling guidance
  • Field training about how to monitor water for E. coli
  • Testing equipment, and
  • Methods for sharing data with ADEQ
