Synopsis and Discussion
PARTICLES: A strong ridge aloft in the mid-latitude storm track will
build over Arizona from the west today and Thursday with tightening east
to west low-level gradients. Stagnation of the air mass in the Phoenix
metro area due to significant warming aloft will be countered by
increasing breezes today with downright windy conditions possible
Thursday morning into the early afternoon hours with excellent
visibilities. This, along with recent rainfall, should keep all air
pollutant concentrations within the good range of the Air Quality Index.
Another strong and potentially very wet Pacific storm system is poised
to bring periods of rainfall during the Friday evening to Monday
afternoon timeframe.
OZONE: Although Valley ozone precursor (NOx & VOC) emissions tend to
remain fairly constant all year, by October those factors conducive to
efficient ozone production - such as sun angle, day length, and
excessive heat - have all become less. Thus, local ozone levels are
typically not much of an air quality problem again until late March.
