Synopsis and Discussion
Weather conditions more typical of late-March will exist over the Valley today and Tuesday. Afternoon highs approaching 90 deg F on Tuesday will contribute to local ozone levels that reach the low-moderate range of the Air Quality Index - but primarily at far eastern metro monitoring sites. However, this innocuous scenario will be short-lived as a very strong winter-like storm is forecast to impact the local forecast area on Wednesday and Thursday with gusty winds; showers and thunderstorms are possible on late Wednesday and Thursday as well. Hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) readings were rather high at some monitors this a.m., indicating that dry and disturbed soils already exist in the metro area. Between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. West Forty Third had concentrations between 110.6 and 137.1ug/m3, Durango had 107.5 to 111.2ug/3 between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m., and Greenwood had 98.1ug./m3 at 7:00 a.m. Wind gusts in the metro area are expected to reach 40 mph by late Wednesday afternoon and last into the evening hours.
With NWS Wind Advisories expected to be issued for most if not all of the desert areas over and west of the Valley, there will be a high potential for blowing/transported/suspended dust to occur locally despite recent rainfall. Since elevated to high PM-10 levels are forecast to occur, a PM-10 Health Watch will likely need to be issued for Wednesday. -Reith
