Synopsis and Discussion
A trough of low pressure will dip south into Arizona Friday, slowly
moving east into New Mexico late Saturday night. Winds across the
Phoenix forecast area are expected to pick up early Friday to around 10
mph, increasing to 20 mph by 2pm with a few stronger gusts, and
significantly decreasing by 8pm. Because this system is void of
moisture, pockets of blowing dust are likely across the deserts. This
may translate into higher PM10 concentrations along the Salt River and
other open-desert areas. Fortunately, recent rain has done a fair job
in stabilizing the soil. This should help to keep the 24-hr PM10 levels
in the "Good" range. The winds will also make it difficult for ozone
precursors to set up over the Valley. Thus, lower ozone levels are
expected on Friday and Saturday.
High pressure will rebound on Sunday, allowing the deserts to warm to
the lower 80s under sunny skies. An upward trend in ozone can also be
expected Sunday through early next week as temperatures continue towards
the mid 80s by next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Check back Friday for your weekend's weather and air quality outlook.
Until then, have a good day! -J.Paul
