Synopsis and Discussion
Although not forecast to occur until later in the week, local ozone levels on Monday reached the moderate range of the Air Quality Index for the first time this season. Easterly winds were not as strong as expected, only managing to push the highest ozone concentrations over the central and west Valley. With even warmer daytime readings expected on Wednesday and Thursday, predicted ozone levels have been raised accordingly and will likely peak Thursday due to an afternoon wind shift that will move local the ozone plume back to the east toward higher background concentrations. Also noticed this a.m. were rather high hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) readings that approached 150ug/m3 at both the Durango and West Forty Third monitoring sites. This means that after only a week without rainfall local soils have begun to dry out under full sunshine and are already contributing to local dust emissions. A fairly strong wind event is possible on Friday, so this situation will be closely scrutinized. -Reith
