Synopsis and Discussion
A relatively minor (wind gusts to 30 mph) thunderstorm outflow boundary reached the Phoenix metro area from the east early this a.m. In addition to helping to produce a few light showers and thunderstorms over the Valley, it generated widespread but most light amounts of blowing dust. Between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m. several local monitoring sites had hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) concentrations between 200 and 400ug/m3. The potential for a significant blowing dust episode for Pinal and Maricopa counties will remain high for at least the next few evenings as storm steering winds become more southeasterly - the best chance now appears to be on Wednesday. Ozone levels are definitely on the move upward today; as of 10:00 a.m. hourly readings ranged from 50-69 parts per billion with the majority of sites running 10-25 ppb higher than 24 hours ago. In addition, late morning ACARS sounding data from Sky Harbor Airport indicates an east to southeasterly wind component up to about the 5K' level. However, this is not expected to persist since synoptic gradients aloft favor a south to southwesterly wind by this afternoon. Although the extent and timing of convective cloud cover continues to be a complicating factor, in deference to this trend the forecasted concentrations have been adjusted to near Health Watch criteria for Wednesday. -Reith
