Synopsis and Discussion
It appears that a prolonged period of active monsoon weather is in the offing for much of AZ with a moist easterly flow aloft veering to southeasterly on Tuesday and southerly on Wednesday. Steering winds will be favorable for moving thunderstorms and outflow boundaries from higher terrain toward the Phoenix metro area; thus, a moderate risk for dense blowing dust will exist each day unless/until significant rainfall occurs. Low-level gradient winds are advertised to remain westerly, however, which tends to inhibit local ozone accumulation. Meanwhile, day-to-day variations in residual and convective cloud cover, as well as the reach and duration of thunderstorm outflow boundaries, will have a major influence on ozone production. Thus, a mid-moderate range AQI persistence type forecast appears to be the best strategy until a clearer ozone pattern emerges. -Reith
