*AN OZONE HEATH WATCH FOR WEDNESDAY, JULY 14, 2010 HAS BEEN ISSUED*
Monsoon storms continue to fire along the Mogollon Rim east of Phoenix and north towards Flagstaff. The steering flow, however, has just not been favorable to send the storms barreling towards the Valley. The primary reason is the upper level area of high pressure. It's struggling to maintain a position near the Four Corners. The high is expected to make a come-back later this week, though. Afternoon desert temperatures will climb well above 110°F, pushing 115°F by the weekend. Combine that with increased moisture and the heat index could be even higher! Thus, the Phoenix National Weather Service will likely replace the current Excessive Heat Watch with an Excessive Heat Warning later this afternoon, lasting through Friday.

Air quality has been really good that past couple of days. Only one monitor (Tonto Nat'l Mon.) reached the MODERATE category on Monday. Durango's PM2.5 monitor also registered low MODERATE levels. Otherwise, everything else was in the GOOD category of the Air Quality Index (AQI). Ozone is expected to rapidly increase the next couple of days as local winds will be much lighter with the return of high pressure. The flow will still be from west to east, so the target area of highest concentrations will be in the east Valley (Apache Junction, Fountain Hills, Rio Verde, West Chandler, etc.). We're issuing an Ozone Health Watch for Wednesday with the likelihood of extending it through Thursday.

We're also keeping the threat of blowing dust in the forecast through the weekend as thunderstorm activity along the Rim is capable of generating blowing dust along the surface. However, because the risk is only slight, PM10 concentrations are forecast to be GOOD through Thursday.

Check back tomorrow for the latest. Until then, have a good day! -J.Paul
