*FRIDAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH SATURDAY, JULY 10, 2010*
An active Monsoon pattern has set up across Desert Southwest as high pressure has migrated near the Four Corners region. As a result, a good surge of moisture is moving north into the Arizona. Coupled with an increasingly unstable atmosphere, the deserts could see some thunderstorm during the evening hours of Friday through Sunday. Outflow winds will likely produce areas of blowing dust that could travel as much as 100 miles, reaching as high as 3,000 feet at times. This increases the risk of elevated PM10 concentrations the next several days.
Current ozone levels are being held down by the spotty cloud cover. During breaks, however, we are seeing concentrations rise. The forecast calls for light southerly winds on Saturday turning a bit southwesterly on Sunday, and possibly out of the northeast on Monday. The shifting winds and potential thunderstorms with morning debris clouds make ozone forecasting very difficult. We're going to EXTEND the current Ozone Health Watch through Saturday, but trend forecast levels down through Sunday.
We'll revisit the situation on Sunday for Monday. Until then, have a great weekend! -J.Paul
