Synopsis and Discussion

A PM-10 HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY AND AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAIN IN
EFFECT TODAY WEDNESDAY MAY 21

A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THURSDAY MAY 22

Winds associated with an unusually strong late-season upper level trough
and surface cold front had generated widespread blowing dust over the
Valley by 10:00 a.m. this morning. Sustained wind speeds up to 30 mph
with gusts to 40 mph have been measured thru the noon hour and
visibilities have dropped to as low as seven miles at some locations.
Coarse particle (PM-10) levels have soared at some monitoring sites; the
highest hourly reading being 1207.9ug/m3 at the West Forty Third site at
9:00 a.m. With strong and gusty winds expected to last well into the
nighttime hours, unhealthy levels of PM-10 will likely occur at times
over much of the forecast area during the next 6-8 hours; thus, today's
PM-10 High Pollution Advisory will remain in effect, and the potential
for lingering dust has prompted the issuance of a PM-10 Health Watch for
Thursday. Thankfully, an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms
is expected by Thursday afternoon with a chance of heavy showers on
Friday. Until then, Valley air quality will be a concern for those
persons with heart or lung disease - who should limit outdoor activity
today.
