Synopsis and Discussion

AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY
AN OZONE HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY MAY 20

Record heat is on tap for the local forecast area the next few days due to the presence of a very warm and relatively dry air mass in conjunction with a very strong upper level ridge. Nil cloud cover will mean that local ozone production will be very efficient; afternoon west to northwesterly winds will tend to move the plume toward and over east valley areas. Forecast streamline charts indicate that by Tuesday morning low-level (~5K') flow will have become increasing conducive for the transport of additional ozone and its precursors from central and southern California - where unhealthy ozone levels were detected on Sunday - toward the Phoenix metro area. Similar situations in the past have resulted in locally unhealthy ozone concentrations absent record heat; thus, since Tuesday's ozone levels may reach well into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI range at some northeast and east valley locations, a High Pollution Advisory has been issued. Ozone levels may remain high on Wednesday at which time strong and gusty winds associated with the arrival of a strong but dry cold front is expected to generate widespread blowing dust; this situation will be expanded upon on Tuesday.
