Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH AND A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH ARE IN EFFECT TODAY JUNE
04

Much of Arizona got clobbered again by high ozone levels on Tuesday:
Prescott in Yavapai County, Flagstaff in Coconino County, Yuma in Yuma
County, Alamo Lake in La Paz County, and several locations in or near
Maricopa County all reported unhealthy or near-to-unhealthy ozone
concentrations. It is probable that a continuing influx of additional
ozone and/or its precursors from California is partly responsible, and
as long as the mid-latitude storm track remains active at this latitude,
more "enriched" ozone events are likely. In the meantime, another
strong but dry upper level trough and surface cold front are headed
toward Arizona from the northwest. In additional to possible lingering
high ozone levels, strong and gusty winds near 40 mph today will likely
generate plenty of blowing and suspended dust (PM-10) from this
afternoon well into the evening hours. Potentially high levels of both
ozone and PM-10 could pose a significant health risk to those Valley
residents with heart or lung disease, and those groups are urged to
limit their time outdoors today. Lingering dust is possible on
Thursday, but ozone levels should drop as winds aloft become more
northerly. An increase in ozone may occur again as early as
Friday.-Reith
