Synopsis and Discussion
TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU WEDNESDAY JUNE 04
Ozone and/or precursor transport from California appears to be ongoing;
upwind sites at both Yuma (Yuma County) and Alamo Lake (La Paz County)
had elevated ozone levels on Monday; despite wind gusts near 30 mph, six
Valley sites had ozone Air Quality Index readings at or above the
mid-moderate range. Local ozone monitors indicate that between 9:00 and
10:00 a.m. this morning hourly levels rose as much as 16 parts per
billion and that all but three sites had higher readings than 24 hours
ago. Streamline analyses and prognostics agree that upstream flow in the
5K to 10K' layer will be modestly to very conducive to additional such
transport into Thursday morning. Sunny skies and afternoon temperatures
near 100 deg F will make for efficient local ozone production both today
and Wednesday, despite gusty westerly afternoon winds tomorrow. For
these reasons the current Ozone Health Watch will again be extended, but
due to the winds on Wednesday, only the far northeast and east Valley
areas should be at risk for unhealthy ozone levels. Some blowing dust
is possible Wednesday afternoon, but should not be sufficient to cause
levels of coarse particles (PM-10) to reach critical levels for the
24-hour sampling period. -Reith
