Synopsis and Discussion
Another vigorous but dry upper trough and surface cold front are on the
way toward Arizona from the northwest. Once again it appears that gusty
winds will be the major feature both Tuesday and Wednesday-with strong
winds possible even during the overnight hours during the frontal
passage. By Wednesday morning over the local forecast area westerly
wind speeds are forecast to be as high as 200 mph at 35K', 98 mph at
18K', and 50 mph at 10K'. Depending on the degree of cloud cover, at
least some of this momentum is likely to reach the surface overhead as
well as upstream where a long fetch of dry desert soil exists. As a
result, there is again the potential for not only localized blowing dust
but also for suspended dust to be transported over the valley. A PM-10
Health Watch issuance may be needed for Wednesday as a precaution for
those with heart or lung disease. -Reith
