Synopsis and Discussion
As of 9:00 a.m. Monday a few showers had broken out over the northwest portion of the metro area. The current heavy cloud cover and showers are associated with the approach of a major short wave trough in the mid-latitude storm track that will weaken as it moves over Arizona today. In its wake an upper level ridge will build over the local forecast area on Tuesday and Wednesday and bring with it a warming trend along with relatively light winds and warming aloft. As a result, expect an increase in particle pollutant concentrations as the air mass become more stagnant. Also, local ozone levels may exhibit a modest increase Tuesday when low-level winds will favor ozone/precursor transport from California. Particle pollutant levels are expected to peak on Wednesday ahead of a much stronger trough due late in the work week. -Reith
