East Central Phoenix - 48th Street and Indian School Road | Site Overview

Registry placement date: March 26, 1999

Score: 27

County: Maricopa

Location: Phoenix, bounded by Devonshire Avenue to the north, Fairmont Avenue to the south, 48th Street to the east and 45th Place to the west

Contaminant of concern: Tetrachloroethene (PCE)

Action taken: ADEQ and the Salt River Project (SRP) entered into an agreement to conduct a source control interim remedial action (IRA) in 2004. As part of the IRA, SRP constructed a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system to remediate the source of PCE in soil. SRP relinquished control of the SVE system to ADEQ which continued to operate and was then decommissioned in 2012. A vapor intrusion indoor air assessment study took place during the summer of 2013 and in February 2014. This assessment focused on residences (specifically single-family homes and ground-floor residences of multi-unit buildings) and schools. Results indicated that there was no threat to residences from vapor intrusion and that no indoor mitigation systems were necessary.

Status: The site is in the remedial investigation (RI) phase. PCE in the groundwater at the source area has decreased and is less than 5 micrograms per liter (µg/L). PCE was detected above the Aquifer Water Quality Standards (AWQS) in wells downgradient of the source, indicating the plume has migrated. The last groundwater sampling event occurred in August of 2016. A deep groundwater monitoring well was installed at the source in April 2018.

Community Advisory Board (CAB): Established and meets on a regular basis
