East Central Phoenix - 38th Street and Indian School Road | Site Overview

Registry placement date: Sept. 21, 1998

Score: 20

County: Maricopa

Location: Phoenix, bounded by Indian School Road to the north, Piccadilly Road to the south, 38th Street to the east and 36th Street to the west

Contaminant of concern: Tetrachloroethene (PCE)

Action taken: ADEQ conducted an early response action (ERA) that consisted of a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system to remediate the source of PCE in the soil and groundwater. The system was started in 1994, operated intermittently and shut down in March 2003 and the SVE system was removed from the site. In 2014, additional groundwater monitor wells were installed. The final remedial investigation (RI) report was completed in April 2015 and the feasibility study work plan was completed in May 2015.

Status: The site is in the feasibility study (FS) phase. The FS report is currently in the process of being drafted. A multi-injection pilot test for in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) consisting of a catalyzed hydrogen peroxide reagent was implemented on Oct. 31, 2017, Nov. 27, 2017, and Jan. 29, 2018. ISCO injections were conducted to supplement the planned monitored natural attenuation (MNA) remedy. Two confirmatory groundwater sampling events were done on Jan. 2, 2018, and April 5, 2018, confirmed that PCE concentrations are now below the Arizona AWQS of 5 µg/L. A site-wide sampling event will occur in May 2018.

Community Advisory Board (CAB): Established and meets on a regular basis
