East Central Phoenix - 32nd Street and Indian School Road

Registry placement date: May 18, 2000

Score: 29

County: Maricopa

Location: Phoenix, with the plume approximately bounded by Indian School Road to the north, Interstate 10 to the south, 32nd Street to the east and 1st Street to the west

Contaminant of concern: Tetrachloroethene (PCE)

Action taken: Site investigations began in 1984, following discovery of PCE in SRP irrigation wells. ADEQ initiated an early response action (ERA), in 2006, consisting of a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system that operated for several years prior to decommissioning.

A vapor intrusion indoor air assessment study took place during the summer of 2013 and February 2014. The indoor air of residences in the study area was sampled twice to compare data on a seasonal level. This assessment focused on residences (specifically single-family homes and ground-floor residences of multi-unit buildings) and schools. Selected confirmatory samples were obtained in 2016.

In 2013 and 2014, ADEQ completed construction of SVE remediation systems near the Maroney’s Cleaners site and behind the former Viking’s Cleaners facility. From 2015 to 2017, groundwater wells were installed to further characterize the PCE plume.

Status: The site is in the remedial investigation (RI) phase. SVE systems are currently being evaluated for optimization or decommissioning. Volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations continue to decrease. Groundwater sampling and drilling is ongoing to determine the lateral and vertical extent of PCE contamination so that final remedial actions can be implemented.

Community Advisory Board (CAB): Established and meets on a regular basis
