East Central Phoenix - 24th Street and Grand Canal | Site Overview

Registry placement date: May 18, 2000

Score: 29

County: Maricopa

Location: Phoenix, with the plume approximately bounded by East Pinchot Avenue to the north, Oak Street to the south, 26th Street to the east and 16th Street to the west

Contaminant of Concern (COC): Tetrachloroethene (PCE)

Action taken: The remedial investigation (RI) began in 2007. In 2014, PCE in groundwater ranged from 1.0 microgram per liter (μg/L) to 2,100 μg/L. In February 2015, five groundwater wells and four soil vapor wells were installed to further characterize the PCE plume. In April 2015, PCE in SV ranged from 1,600 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m³) to 1,300,000 μg/m³ at depths of 30 to 35 feet below ground surface. A soil vapor extraction (SVE) system was designed in late 2015.

Status: IThe site is in the remedial investigation (RI) phase. As part of an early response action (ERA), in July 2016, the SVE system began treating the soil vapor in the area of 24th Street and Thomas. Groundwater sampling and drilling is ongoing to determine the lateral and vertical extent of PCE contamination so that a final remedial action can be implemented.

Community Advisory Board (CAB): Established and meets on a regular basis
