Central and Camelback | Site Overview

Registry placement date: June 21, 2000

Score: 32*

County: Maricopa

Location: Phoenix, approximately bounded by Georgia Avenue to the north, Mariposa Street to the south, Second Street to the east and First Avenue to the west.

Contaminants of concern: Tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE). Due to past releases from underground gasoline storage tanks, other contaminants present include benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) and 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA).

Action taken: In January 2003, as part of an early response action (ERA), ADEQ completed construction of a groundwater treatment system to remediate and control the migration of contaminated groundwater. The groundwater pump and treat system still operates.

In June 2004, ADEQ initiated an ERA evaluation of the Maroney’s Drycleaner facility. Based on the results, a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system was installed to address the PCE-contaminated soil beneath the site and is currently in operation.

Status: The remedial investigation (RI) was initiated in 2007. Passive and active soil gas surveys were conducted in the vicinity of the former drycleaner’s building and to the north along and adjacent to Central Avenue. A final RI report was completed in December 2014. The feasibility study (FS) work plan and FS report were completed in 2015. The FS recommends continued operation of the ERA systems. Groundwater samples were collected in October 2015 and March 2016. Data indicates that contaminants of concern in groundwater continue to attenuate.

Community Advisory Board (CAB): Established, merged with the Seventh Avenue and Bethany Home Road CAB and meets on a regular basis.
