Green Remediation Practices | Corrective Action

Following are remediation planning tips and guidance to improve environmental outcomes at leaking underground storage tank cleanup sites.

Early Action

  • Evaluate risk early in the process to determine remedial goals and seek risk-based closure.
  • Consult ADEQ’s Early Cleanup Technology Deployment Guidance to mitigate plume migration | Learn More >
  • Involve the Environmental Protection Agency’s Best Management Practices (BMPs) in scope of work | Learn More >

Product Selection

  • Choose products manufactured through processes involving nontoxic chemical alternatives.
  • Use products, packing material and disposable equipment with reuse or recycling potential.
  • Identify and utilize local sources of materials.
  • Use the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) to find electronic products with reduced impacts on the environment | Learn More >
  • Use biodegradable cleaning products in cold water applications to conserve energy.

Other Practices

  • Incorporate energy-, waste- and water-saving initiatives | Learn More >
  • Consider conducting a pilot test before full-scale implementation of a design remedy.
  • Evaluate feasibility of using mobile laboratory or field analytical methods with little waste.
  • Teleconference with vendors/contractors.
  • Recycle/re-use materials generated during site remediation.
  • Consider limiting the removal of trees and vegetation during construction or transplanting shrubs to other onsite locations.
  • Coordinate multiple site activities at the same time to reduce mobilization and de-mobilization costs.
