Lawn and Garden Emission Reduction Programs

Revised On: Apr. 8th, 2026 - 04:31 pm

Arizona law requires large counties, those with over 500,000 people, to establish a voluntary program to reduce emissions from lawn and garden equipment. To cut down on the air pollution created by gas-powered devices, ADEQ has teamed up with the Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) and the Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ). These programs give residents and commercial users in Maricopa and Pima Counties a chance to trade in their old gas-powered lawn and garden equipment for a voucher they can use to purchase electric alternatives.1

What are the health effects of pollution from lawn and garden equipment?

Gas-powered lawn and garden equipment is a source of air pollution that includes particulate matter (dust), ground-level ozone, and carbon monoxide. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), these pollutants can cause or contribute to a number of adverse health effects, including heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cancer.

Why should you replace your old lawn and garden equipment?

In just one hour, a gas-powered commercial leaf blower releases emissions that are equivalent to driving a car 1,100 miles, which is about the distance between Phoenix and Dallas or over 15 hours of drive time.2

This voluntary program gives people the power to aid in air pollution reduction efforts. Electric-powered lawn and garden equipment are quieter, cleaner, and eliminate the hassle of obtaining and using gasoline. In addition, electric equipment protects the operator’s health from exposure to fumes and their hearing from high decibel noise levels.

How do I participate?
