Marty McCarthy was selected acting director of the Southern Regional Office (SRO) in Tucson in February 2009. Marty had been regional compliance manager for SRO for nine years, overseeing compliance actions with the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Air Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and Arizona Administrative Code.

A registered professional engineer in Arizona and New Mexico, Marty served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, where he supervised voice and data telecommunications infrastructure operations. Marty later worked as a commissioned officer for the U.S. Public Health Service for 20 years, where he was an engineering program chief on an array of projects in New Mexico, Minnesota and Arizona, retiring in 1999.

Marty holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Science degree in engineering management from the University of Alaska.
