A state law enacted in 2001 authorized ADEQ to target $2.4 million to assist communities of fewer than 15,000 people with the removal of abandoned underground storage tanks. This law was revised in 2004 to include unincorporated areas of Arizona's counties. These properties may once have been service stations or commercial businesses, and evidence of the USTs, such as fuel pumps, may have been removed.

The Municipal Tank Closure Program can help take such tanks out of the ground and clean up contamination at no cost to the property owner or the community. In fact, funding is available to reimburse counties, cities and towns for application costs. Upon completion, the community will have done its part to protect public health and the environment and enhance property redevelopment.
